Our Top 5 Tips for Hiring Your Wedding DJ

Your DJ does more than just play music—they guide the energy, keep the timeline flowing, and help make your day feel seamless. Whether you're dreaming of a dance floor packed from start to finish or just want a relaxed, curated vibe, here are five tips to help you choose the right DJ for your wedding.

1. Music Selections That Reflect You

Ask how your DJ collects music for your ceremony and reception. At Elevated Entertainment, we don’t just play a list—we take the songs you and your partner love and use them as a foundation to build a full soundtrack that flows with your day. Whether you're leaning into indie-folk for cocktail hour or want to blend old-school bangers with today’s hits for dancing, we’ll expand on your selections to keep the energy just right.

2. Announcements & Crowd Interaction

Some DJs are hype machines, while others take a more low-key approach. We personally lean toward light to moderate interaction—but every couple is different! How much on-mic time are you looking for?

Make sure your DJ knows how to clearly and confidently handle things like your grand entrance, first dance, and other key announcements. These moments matter, and the energy and clarity your DJ brings to them sets the tone.

3. Equipment, Set-Up & the Techy Stuff

All DJ setups are not created equal. Your DJ should have equipment suited to your venue size, plus backups in case anything goes sideways. They should also be licensed to play music (yes, that’s a thing) and carry liability insurance. If they don’t have those basics covered, it’s a red flag.

4. Professionalism (a.k.a. You Deserve Better Than "That Guy")

This is one of the biggest days of your life—don’t risk hiring someone who treats it like a frat party. Your DJ should be punctual, polished, and respectful of the vibe you’re going for. We’ve seen it all (and have the stories to prove it), but we pride ourselves on keeping it classy and reading the room. Also, sorry Uncle Joe—your “dope Spotify playlist” isn’t going to cut it here.

5. Bonus Services Can Save You Time & Stress

One thing we've heard from our couples is how much they loved booking multiple services from a single vendor. Less back-and-forth communication = less stress. If your DJ also offers a photobooth, audio guestbook, or other entertainment options, that can streamline your planning and create a more cohesive experience.
